R. Patrick Savage, Jr., Ph.D.

Dr. Savage is a graduate of Catholic University of America. He received his license to practice Psychology in 1986 and has practiced as a Licensed Psychologist in Prince George’s but most recently in Montgomery County for thirty plus years. He has lived in the Washington, D.C. area for most of his life and been a member of the Maryland Psychological Association (MPA) member since 1987. He has worked for the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County, Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County Health Department, operated an Employee Assistance Program for a major corporation in the area, and served as a peer reviewer/advisor for a local insurance company in addition to maintaining a private practice. He is a fellow of the Maryland Psychological Association (MPA), a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), and the National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN).

Most recently he was recognized for his commitment to and passion for his work by receiving the Maryland Psychological Association’s 2017 award for Lifetime Professional Contributions to Psychology.

Dr. Savage has served as a leader in his state’s professional organization (MPA) since the Fall of 2007 to 2016. He has served as chairman of the Professional Practice Committee, a member and chairman of the Legislative Committee, chairman of the Finance Committee, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors of MPA. He has held the elected positions of Treasurer and President Elect, President (’13-’14) and Past President.  He is well regarded by his professional colleagues.

Dr. Savage has also written a number of articles for the Maryland Psychologist as well as serving on several editorial boards of professional journals: Applied Neuropsychology, Applied Neuropsychology: Adult, and Applied Neuropsychology: Child.

His experiences have included program development and direction, assessment, supervision and training of psychological associates, consultation with psychologists, consultation in the workplace and in schools, forensic evaluation and testimony, as well as the provision of evaluations and psychotherapy/counseling.

Dr. Savage has frequently presented workshops or given talks to mental health professionals and educators as well as providing educational workshops to community groups and schools on a variety of topics. He is perhaps most well known for his talks on effective parenting based on science and what we know about the brain, stress management, AD/HD,  learning disabilities, and individuals who struggle with weak executive skill functions.

Dr. Savage provides therapy to children, adolescents, adults and families who are coping with a host of emotional and behavioral issues. Areas of special interest and experience include treatment of AD/HD, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, concussion, diseases affecting brain function, anxiety and mood disorders, behavioral difficulties, educational difficulties and self-injury. He also has a strong background in working with parents and families around issues related to parenting practices based in science and our current understanding of brain function that are effective for all children but critical for success with children experiencing behavioral and emotional difficulties. Dr. Savage works with individuals and families in a collaborative manner, tailoring interventions to support each individual’s, child’s and family’s needs, lifestyle, values, circumstance and developmental stage. He utilizes a variety of evidence-based techniques and attempts to utilize the latest research to guide his work.

Dr. Savage has successfully provided assessments and counseling for 30+ years to individuals, couples, and families, in the Washington, D.C. area from ages six and up. In particular, he provides evaluations to identify the emotional and cognitive factors underlying challenging behavior, academic or occupational difficulty, problems with adjustment, and difficulty negotiating social/interpersonal relationships. Dr. Savage also has years of experience conducting evaluations designed to meet the requirements for obtaining accommodations for elementary, middle, high school and higher education as well as for the college boards, MCATs and LSATs. When requested, Dr. Savage also can participate in multi-disciplinary school meetings to present the findings of an individual’s evaluation. He has a special interest in the assessment and treatment of individuals experiencing a variety of disorders affecting brain function from frank injury and concussion to developmental disorders such as AD/HD, Learning Disabilities, Asperger’s, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, etc. In addition to providing assessments, he enjoys working with a wide range of mental health issues (depression, anxiety, post traumatic and acute stress, chronic/acute illness, substance use/abuse, marital issues, etc.) in a culturally diverse population ranging in age from 6 through adulthood.

Dr. Savage can, when desired, help individuals/families integrate psychology and faith-based issues that contribute to an individuals’ overall emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being.

Dr. Savage has another special interest in working with athletes both to enhance their performance through the use of sound psychological principles as well as providing concussion management services to athletes. These include baseline testing, followup testing, and determining when it is safe to return a concussed athlete back to play. He currently maintains a full time practice in the Olney area.
